Leah Barton Leah Barton, VP & GM, Home Protection, Direct Energy

Leah Barton is Vice President & General Manager, Home Protection, North America Home, Centrica plc, with full P&L responsibility for home warranties, protection plans, and appliance programs. Leah has over 15 years of energy industry experience spanning commercial, IT, finance, marketing, and operations leadership roles at Centrica, MXenergy, and Shell Chemical LP.  Early in her career, Leah managed hydrogen power system engineering with Nuvera Fuel Cells and also served as a U.S. Peace Corps Volunteer in Tanzania.
Leah holds a BS in Chemical Engineering from Yale, an MBA from the Wharton School, and an MA in International Relations from the University of Pennsylvania.  She is active in the Houston community, currently serving as President of the UH Friends of Women’s Studies, Director and Past President of EMERGE Fellowship, Director of the St. Paul's United Methodist Foundation, and an American Leadership Forum Senior Fellow.

Dina Abdelrazik joined Parks Associates in 2016 as a part of the Consumer Analytics research team. She currently studies market trends and consumer behavior, focused in emerging technology products and services.

Dina earned her MS in Marketing, with a concentration in Marketing Analytics, from the University of Texas at Dallas and a BA in Advertising from Southern Methodist University.

Tom leads Parks Associates research in the areas of home controls, energy management, and home networks. Tom authors numerous reports on energy management and home controls covering the evolution of technology, partnership opportunities, and new business models. Tom’s work at Parks Associates includes managing consumer surveys that track trends and market opportunities and enable insightful evidence-based forecasting for energy, security, and home controls. Tom speaks frequently at key industry events, and his views are sought out by national press organizations and publications.

Tom has done extensive consulting with electric utilities operating in a variety of regulator structures and numerous firms within the smart home ecosystem. Recent utility engagements include defining the home area network roadmap for a California IOU, updating the consumer engagement strategy for a traditional vertically integrated IOU, providing consumer and industry analysis to refine EE and DR programs for an IOU in a restructured market, and providing insights on the evolution of the connected home for a large Midwest IOU. Tom has also led projects for many Fortune 500 companies, helping clients refine smart home strategies, develop scenarios of the future of the smart home market, enhance product roadmaps, and refine specific product features.

Prior to working at Parks Associates, Tom worked as director of engineering and director of product management in multiple industries. Tom began his career in the U.S. Navy nuclear power program on submarines. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the U.S. Naval Academy in systems engineering and a master's in software engineering from the University of Texas.

Steve Hambric Steve Hambric, VP, Distributed Energy Management, Itron

Steve Hambric possesses 15 years of experience delivering services and solutions to the utilities industry. He is passionate about deploying innovative technology to deliver energy more efficiently and reliably. In that spirit, Steve will drive strategic sales of Comverge’s demand response, energy efficiency, and customer engagement solutions, and will also lead Sales Operations.

Prior to Comverge, Steve worked at Opower where he designed and sold behavioral energy efficiency and customer engagement programs to North American and European utilities. At Sapient, Steve was a leader in the energy and utilities practice, developing innovative business strategies and operational plans for the industry. Prior to Sapient, Steve worked at McKinsey & Company, providing strategic consulting services for fortune 500 energy companies.

Steve holds a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and a Master of Science in Management and Information Systems, both from the University of Virginia. He also holds a Master of Business Administration from INSEAD in Fontainebleau, France. 

Jeff Hamel Jeff Hamel, Head of North American Energy Partnerships, Nest Labs

Jeff Hamel is the head of North American energy partnerships at Nest Labs, where he works with utility partners to develop customer-focused energy programs that leverage Nest products. Prior to joining Nest, Jeff was the Executive Director for EPRI’s Power Delivery and Utilization team, with responsibilities for growing broad collaboration with global utilities and governmental agencies. Before joining EPRI in 2007, Hamel worked at General Electric for 8 years, and was responsible for managing and leading new growth in GE’s power business. Jeff earned his Bachelors or Science, a U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Marine License, and his commission in the U.S. Naval Reserves while attending Massachusetts Maritime Academy. In addition, Jeff has also earned an MBA from Santa Clara University. Together with his wife and two sons, Jeff resides in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Matt Johnson Matt Johnson, VP of Business Development, EnergyHub

Matt's primary focus is building relationships with distributed energy resource (DER) manufacturers and service providers who are interested in adding their connected devices to the Mercury DERMS platform. Matt also works with utilities deploying smart thermostats and other DERs for demand response and load management programs. Prior to joining EnergyHub, Matt held a variety of positions in the energy sector, including serving as Director of Business Development at Gaia Power Technologies, an energy storage firm, and as an Assistant Vice President at Sentech, a clean energy consultancy.

Matt holds an MBA and a MS in Environmental Policy from the University of Michigan, and a BA in History and Public Policy Analysis from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Olaf Lohr Olaf Lohr, Director of Business Development, Sonnen, Inc.

Olaf Lohr, born in Chemnitz, Germany, has a background in electrical engineering, renewables and business development, and graduated from the University of Bayreuth with a Masters in Business and Sports Management.
As the Sr. Manager for Utility Relations at sonnen, Olaf provides leadership for the company’s expansion in specific US markets. He is primarily focused on developing new business models for the energy storage markets where customers and utilities will benefit from sonnen’s disruptive technology, and leverage energy storage services for utilities. 
Olaf lives in Southern California with his wife Catalina in a solar and energy storage equipped home.

Joel Miller Joel Miller, Principal Supervisor, DTE Energy

Joel Miller is the Supervisor for Energy Management Tools at DTE Energy where he has led the development and commercialization of DTE Insight since 2013. Joel earned his bachelor's degree with a major in Mechanical Engineering Technology from Wayne State University and an M.B.A. from of the Central Michigan University with concentrations in the Value Driven Organization and is a certified Lean Six Sigma Black Belt. His primary focus are those processes that gain deep insight into customer behaviors, market potential, and the application of emerging technology that delivers an excellent customer experience. 

Judd Moritz Judd Moritz, SVP of Solutions , Simple Energy

Judd has worked in the energy industry for more than 18 years, engaging with utilities and regional transmission organizations (RTO) across North America to design and deliver energy efficiency and demand response solutions. His career has spanned program operations, DSM program planning, sales and product development. 
As the SVP, Solutions at Simple Energy, Judd applies his understanding of utility DSM/DER programs, rates, regulatory motivations and the evolving utility landscape to help utilities achieve their goals as they redefine their relationship with their customers.  Judd leverages his industry knowledge and network of industry partners to help drive Simple Energy’s solutions into emerging markets as the industry continues to evolve to be more distributed and customer-centric.
Prior to Simple Energy, Judd was a Senior Director at CLEAResult Consulting and managed business development and engagement strategy for a diverse array of electric and gas utilities in the Midwestern and Southeastern United States promoting CLEAResults products and capabilities and continuously defining new product and program opportunities to drive innovation while also pushing short term and long term growth.  During this time, Judd also acted as the vice-chair of Policy for the Midwestern Energy Efficiency Alliance.
Judd got started in business development when he worked as a Director of Utility Solutions at EnerNOC where he collaborated with vertically integrated utilities and RTOs to implement a suit of innovative C&I Demand Response solutions as well as a portfolio of utility DSM consulting capabilities. 
Prior to providing services to utilities, Judd worked at Ameren Energy where he acted as the liaison to the Midcontinent ISO (MISO) for the Demand Response Working Group. He also led a team that developed and delivered electric and natural gas DSM program portfolios in both Illinois and Missouri, conducted extensive cost-effectiveness analyses for various energy efficiency and demand response measures and programs, and investigated the nuances around various DSM cost recovery mechanisms. 
Judd’s energy career started at APX in Santa Clara, CA where he managed the California Demand Reserves Partnership Program, which at the time was the largest capacity-based demand response program in the country. He has a bachelor's degree in environmental studies from The University of Kansas and an MBA from Webster University.

Dain Nestel Dain Nestel, Director, ecobee

Dain Nestel has been in the energy sector since 2008 where he has overseen the delivery of Residential EE portfolios, consulted clients and partners on best practice program models and launched a successful demand response initiative. Dain is ecobee’s Director of Energy where he is focused on creating multi-directional value streams, for utilities and their customers, through innovation and the smart home.

Emmett Romine Emmett Romine, General Manager Insight & Demand Side Management, DTE Energy

Emmett is the General Manager Insight & Demand Side Management within DTE Energy and a Board Member at Powerley, a joint venture between DTE Energy and Vectorform LLC. He is responsible for the following:

  • Growing DTE Insight customer user base
  • Overseeing the development of new features for the mobile app
  • Developing appropriate customer support infrastructure
  • Commercializing the technology through the Powerley joint venture
  • Assisting in startup operations of Powerley
  • Operating and growing DTE Energy’s demand response capabilities

Emmett has held roles in project management, enterprise performance management, distribution operations, and he started and built the energy efficiency business at DTE. Prior to DTE, he held leadership roles KPMG Consulting and Enigma. He holds an MBA and a BS Mechanical Engineering from Washington University in St. Louis and a BA in Physics from William Jewell College in Liberty, MO.
