COVID-19: Transforming the Healthcare Ecosystem
COVID-19 has disrupted the entire healthcare ecosystem, and consumers, payers, providers, and vendors are changing their attitudes, activities, and plans in response. The digital and connectivity foundations laid over the last decade have been put to the test, supercharging investment, deployments, familiarity, and usage of connected health solutions, including telehealth and remote patient monitoring, solutions for seniors and their caretakers, and online fitness and wellness platforms. The COVID-19 crisis has also exposed how much work remains to be done to integrate connected health into the fabric of healthcare access and delivery.

Telehealth and RPM: Moving to the Core of Healthcare Delivery
The COVID-19 pandemic has thrust telehealth solutions to the forefront of health care. Consumer preference for in-person over remote care suddenly flipped under pandemic conditions and solutions enabling providers to reach patients at home have become a necessity for delivering care.
The technology needed for convenient, high-quality, video-supported remote consultations in the comfort of consumers’ homes is established and physician reimbursement has expanded. This session addresses the sudden uptake of telehealth, and the many issues needing attention, including the physician experience, integration of connected medical devices to expand visit limitations, and the prospect for consumers’ ongoing use of telehealth services after the pandemic circumstances have past.

COVID-19 is proving to be a turning point for telehealth, prompting a significant increase in the use of digital devices to remotely access medical treatments, including advances related to routine and preventive care, dental services and behavioral health. By assessing and serving people’s needs remotely, telehealth is helping make health care more convenient, curb costs and reduce potential exposure risks associated with in-person trips to health care facilities.

COVID-19: Seniors, Caregiving, and Independent Living Solutions
COVID-19 exposed the vulnerability of our senior population. In addition to the high risks of infection, the necessity of social distancing exacerbates seniors’ social isolation and makes family caregivers’ jobs more difficult. Demand for communication, telehealth, and independent living solutions to assist seniors in living well and safely at home has never been greater. This session explores how service and technology providers are responding to this new demand and what the independent living market will look like coming out of the COVID-19 crisis.

Even in the B.C. Era (Before COVID), most people wanted to age in the comfort of their own home. Today, one-third of all U.S. Coronavirus deaths are nursing home residents or workers, and even fewer people want to risk their lives by leaving home. However, the cost of homecare has risen to an average of $51,000 per year, unaffordable to many families. Technology can dramatically reduce the cost of 24/7 homecare while also reducing loneliness and depression suffered by many seniors in this era of social distancing. It can improve the safety of professional caregiving for both the caregiver and recipient by enforcing measures such as hand washing and temperature checking. And it can be paid for through veteran’s benefits, Medicare Advantage/Medicaid reimbursement, insurance discounts, and other programs and become affordable to the mainstream.
Mark Dunning, CEO of CPI, describes the fast-changing landscape of homecare including finding innovative ways to pay for these critical services. Gene Wang, CEO of People Power, describes new software that protects people from COVID-19, alerts on emergencies such as falls without requiring wearables, and connects people in ways that reduce anxiety and depression

Home-centric Care: Activating the Ecosystem through Partnerships
The traditional healthcare system cannot deliver on the promise of consumer-centric care with a facility-first mindset. Yet the healthcare ecosystem does not have the assets or experience to provide home services. This session explores the many opportunities for health systems, providers, and payers to engage the ecosystem of home service providers and consumer technology leaders with the products and experience to support the in-home care experience.

The industry has a rare and unique opportunity to better meet patient needs in the environment they prefer while also improving economics. This will require establishment of a new ecosystem in the home, by bringing together traditional healthcare players and newcomers with broadband providers, telecom players, and others already with a foothold in the house, as well as new thinking, actions, and changes to make current assets productive and contributory to meeting healthcare needs in the home. Richard Culberson shares insights and analysis of these changes in action as multiple players work together to create this new ecosystem in the home.

Tracking Health: Technology, Privacy, and Pandemic
The role of data in driving change and improving clinical health outcomes has never been clearer. Accurate data and modeling are critical to decision making for policy makers, public health officials, care providers, businesses, and patients. Data derived from tracking technologies – rather than manual reporting – have the advantage of known parameters and a high confidence in accuracy. Changes in the regulatory and reimbursement landscape have improved the business case for solutions making use of health data. Nevertheless challenges remain – there is a need for solutions that do not just track data but use that data to drive insights and guide care management and delivery, producing measurable clinical outcomes. Logistics, data integration, partnerships, privacy, and security are also all factors that must be addressed in order to drive the market forward.

Visionary Insight: When everything changed, what stayed the same? Healthcare's evolution in a time of pandemic and humanitarian crisis
 |
Angie Kalousek Ebrahimi
Executive Director, Mind-Body Medicine
Blue Shield of California
|

Can COVID-19 make us healthier? Blue Shield of California data shows worrisome trends in eating, sleeping, exercising and drinking habits, medication intake has increased and people are not seeing their doctors as often. However, many positive things are also emerging from the pandemic including increased use of telemedicine, less pollution, fewer traffic deaths, new ways of creating community, and a bold new focus on racial justice in public health.
How will these forces change the way healthcare is designed and delivered? Blue Shield of California is making major investments to fully integrate virtual and clinical care, offer wellbeing solutions as a first line of treatment and put customization and control in the patients’ hands. And Blue Shield of California was already seeing success with this integrative, digital and patient-centered approach to healthcare, before and especially now during COVID-19.
