Leveraging the Smart Home for a Healthy Home

With more time spent at home than ever, under pandemic circumstances, consumers have new concerns about the health and safety of their home environments. Consumers are thinking more about indoor air quality (IAQ), water quality, and how to create and maintain a healthy environment for their loved ones. At the same time, there is an ever-expanding ecosystem of smart products that can enable a variety of health and wellness use cases at home. Connected weight scales and blood pressure cuffs help consumers proactively monitor their health, smart mattresses and sleep monitors improve consumers’ sleep, and smart products like cameras and voice assistants increasingly include sensors and algorithms that can give residents new insight into the health of their environment.

This session addresses how new consumer preferences will increase the value proposition of smart home and wellness tech among consumers, and the implications for product manufacturers, service providers, home builders, and MDU property managers.

Seniors and Caretakers: Serving A Massive Population at Home

As a result of COVID-19 and its associated pressures, seniors and their loved ones have increasingly turned to technology to stay connected, stay entertained, shop for goods, and stay healthy. Increased use of technology by seniors and their families has led to new opportunities in the independent living market, as has the expansion of Medicare and Medicare Advantage to telehealth and the use of digital health technologies.

This session addresses the needs of seniors today and how senior care services have evolved over the past year as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Virtual Health and Remote Monitoring

Beginning in 2020, telehealth and telemedicine solutions have been thrust to the forefront of health care as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The need to avoid exposure to the virus has reversed well-established consumer preferences for in-person visits over remote care. Radical shifts in the regulatory and reimbursement landscape have paved the way for rapid telehealth deployments, including of devices. This session examines trending data on consumer familiarity, use, and demand for telehealth services and connected health devices. Speakers evaluate user experience with telehealth services and investigates consumer appetite for virtual care as a standard offering, outside of crisis conditions.

New Connected Health Use Cases: Impact of COVID-19

The COVID-19 pandemic has turned the healthcare ecosystem on its head. The focal point of care moved away from the care facility and into the home, where patients are encouraged to screen themselves for illness, seek consultative care remotely, and recover from illness at home where possible. Care providers and health systems have leaned on telehealth consultations to make this shift possible. Parks Associates data reveals that 41% of US broadband households used a telehealth service in the 12 months prior to May 2020, up from just 15% reporting such usage in May 2019.

However, while the telehealth networks and services were largely built, robust, and ready to be massively scaled to respond to the pandemic, connected health device adoption and use is severely lagging. Telephone and video conversations only go so far to detecting, diagnosing, monitoring, and treating patients remotely. Connected health devices provide the vital sign data so critical to expanding the potential of remote care.

This session addresses the role of connected health devices in advancing expanding the future of healthcare including:

  • Proactive wellness monitoring for the kids, the family, the elderly
  • Illness monitoring for travel, employment, schooling
  • Ongoing chronic care management
  • Post-discharge monitoring
  • Urgent care/acute telehealth diagnostic support
  • Disease tracking/contact tracing
